http://parade.condenast.com/299762/m...bers-in-color/

from today's Parade magazine:
Quote:
Irene Hurst of Dallas writes:
I associate days of the week, numbers, and names with colors. For example, Saturday is brown, five is red, and Sharon is pink. I’ve always done this; it’s normal for me. But I’ve never told anyone about it except my husband, who’s never heard of such a thing. Is there a word for it? Please not nuts.

Marilyn responds:
The term is synesthesia, and you have the most common form—colored letters and numbers, etc. Not that the trait is common! Studies have found an incidence of about one person in 2,000, with several times as many females as males. Other mixing of senses (sounds, smells, and more) also occurs, but these types are extremely rare. (Be thankful that five is just red—not red, smelly, and sounding like a crow.) Rest assured that people with synesthesia are otherwise perfectly normal.

Is it genetic?
If so, we could just Crispr everyone to have synaesthesia. Right?

I don't understand why thinking that a number has a color is "mixing senses". Knowing how to count isn't a sense. I get that seeing colors would be vision, but what is the other sense that is being mixed?

Wait, is it the sound of the number when spoken aloud, not the actual value that the number represents?

I don't see color with numbers, but I see them in a crazy numberline that goes in all different directions in my head.

0-9 they go right to left, 10-19 go up, 20-29 go left to right. It continues in seemingly random directions for a while in my head.
