I'm not management, so I can only speak from my experience. Being told you're getting a 4% pay cut due to merit (despite the ridiculous-sounding 7.5% CoL increase) doesn't sound like a place where you have a healthy future.

I am management, and I agree.

Had a very good year as far as compensation. Nearly 15% raise but more importantly a bonus in line with my total salary when I became a fellow ages ago. That said, a third of bonus was tied to a one time retention type thing, so next year's will be lower.

But boring as I am no plans to spend at this time.

I do love so much how we are nearing a normal distribution of results which is a perfect representation of the wonderful Central Limit Theorem that makes our jobs possible to accomplish in a sufficient way.

In essence the Central Limit Theorem says the sum (or equivalently, the mean) of independent observations from a distribution tends be normally distributed, regardless of the underlying distribution the numbers came from.

We aren't adding up a bunch of raises, so I don't think the CLT comes into play here. It's just a distribution that is symmetric and possibly looks like something normal.
