Carter was also the last president to speak seriously to the American people about the necessity of austerity. Turns out they didn't like the idea of scrimping on their heating budget as a new normal, and voted in a more optimistic candidate.

We like the idea of austerity in theory, as long as it applies to someone else.

Right Carter only lost because of the hostages. Other than that, things were going swimmingly.

I don't think he was talking about austerity. He was talking about decline. They aren't the same thing.

The real "austerity" happened when Volker, raised interest rates to double digits to squash inflation. We suffered a pretty big recession because of that, but it was off to the races pretty much after that.
