Default To people who graduated before 2000

How did you hear about the actuarial industry? I assume there weren't the same articles glorifying low unemployment rate, high salaries, and low stress environments back then. How you hear about this profession and what convinced you to pursue it?

I saw it on a rock carving in my cave one day.

'cause I'm so old. Get it?

Kidding aside:
My dad noticed that I was pretty good at math and told me about the profession. He was in insurance.

Quick note: the first time all those things you mentioned were published was in 1987 or 1988, when "Actuary" was declared the #1 profession.

the first appearance of "Actuary" in the Jobs Rated Almanac, I believe was in 1988.
I graduated college a few years after that.

I think, if you majored in math or stats, "actuary" was one of those things you could do with such a degree. this was before so many schools had actuarial programs.

My grandfather said it was the only profession he knew that made more than a doctor. I have no idea where he got that idea.

U.S. News and World Report magazine was naming Actuary the #1 profession back in the 90s (yes, we had magazines back in the 90s!). My dad (a math teacher) saw the magazine at the grocery store, brought it home, and said "hey, here's a good career for people who like math. You should do this."

Did they publish "The Jobs Rated Almanac"? I think that was the first one that led to the "explosion."

11 years later, SOA primping itself in the mirror for its 50th anniversary, trying to look good for Tony Bennett:

They distributed posters for college bulletin boards (70's) - "What me, an actuary?". It always reminded me of MAD magazine AE Neuman saying "What, me worry?"
