Default Accounting Minor?

Hi, I'm a going-to-be 2nd year in college. I've got a lot of space in my schedule and I'm considering using the time to do the Accounting Minor at my school. Completing it will allow me to take the CPA exam.

Would this help at all in pursuing an actuarial career? As in would it be more appealing to actuarial companies that I have a minor in accounting and perhaps even pass the CPA exam? Or is this just a 2nd (backup) career option?

Not at all in terms of being an actuary. Most applications could care less about what your minor is.

Accounting is worse than being an actuary.

There are 55 FSAs who are also CPAs.
Using your youthful computing skills, you should be able to go to https://www.actuarialdirectory.org and find them.
Then, you could send them an email & get personalized advice.

I have a feeling that what they'll say is, "Sure, it's been useful to me in my career, but it's not what makes me the great actuary that I am."

Good plan. It always help to know accounting if you work in (the actuarial side of) financial reporting. Plus, if you aren't successful at actuarial exams, it becomes a good fallback plan.

Actuaries are glorified accountants, but they just don't want to admit it for some odd reason. Don't listen to the naysayers. There was no course I took in college that was more useful as an actuary than my accounting classes. Go for it. If you love accounting you will love actuarial work.

Computer Science minor would give you better skill for EL level regardless you end up with being an actuary or being an accountant.

As far as getting CPA, it should be AFTER you get the FSA/FCAS (assume your goal is to be an actuary, not an accountant). I personally do not think it is a good idea to fix both fields in early career. It looks better if you get 4 actuarial exams done rather than 2 actuarial exams + 2 CPA exams.

Oh come on.

How long would learning assets = liabilities + equity take on the job?

Thank you all, and thanks for the actuarial directory site, 1695814. And yes, clam, being an actuary is my priority. I will continue to go through with this minor then.
