Classical anytime, metal if I'm tired, and classic rock (e.g. Beatles, Smiths, Eagles) if I'm wired.

Like Binky, I can't do pop/hiphop while studying; if it's upbeat and the lyrics are clear, I'm too distracted by singing and bouncing along.

Reading: no music.
Doing problems or reviewing material: something gentle like The Hollies or Electric Light Orchestra.

That's a shame because the exam rooms tend to be silent.

I chuckled @ this. I like to listen to an alternative station that I've been working on in pandora.

My studying music was generally instrumental soundtracks to movies -- Stargate, Independance Day, Phantom Menace, and the Lord of the Rings movies were in the mix.

I try to stay away from anything that is "catchy" - that I might catch myself singing along to. Those scores are good. I'd stay away from something like Star Wars for the most part though.

Perhaps you meant to say that there is no spoon tune in metal?
