I still think someone throwing 20 gutter balls is pretty unlikely

Another reason to start with the mid-range ball is that your thumb is likely to change size if you bowl a lot. They can modify the hole and/or you can make adjustments yourself, but these aren't as good as an original hole. Also, your thumb will change size during your session.

that is also true. during winter season, your thumb is smaller cause of the cold weather.

I once had a teammate who fired a 55 in her first game of the night. Then, to show it wasn't a fluke, she fired another one in her third game.

She threw the ball so slowly that there were times when the ball would hit the pins and remain on the lane.

I went Saturday night...the lanes were disgusting. By the end of the game the ball was coated with oil. I couldn't really grip the ball, since I didn't have a towel to wipe it. I blew the seventh frame (gutter followed by a 3) because of it, and missed a one pin pickup for a spare in the 10th. Still ended up with a 149, but easily should have been in the 170's.

Get a towel...seriously, maybe even a towel and a towel "cradle" (a towel with the handles so you just plop the ball in and rock it to get some of the oil off).
