Default What was your first year as an actuary like?

The title says it all. How was your first year being an actuary? Was there anything you wish you did during the first year to help you learn better?

First year as a credentialed actuary, or first year in the profession?

I was coding in APL a UL illustration system using the green screen terminal on my desk. We used PROFS as an interoffice "email" system.

I was constantly worried that I was doing a terrible job and had anxiety about getting fired on a weekly basis.

learned a lot of excel. and converting lotus to excel. learned how to review others' work and have my work reviewed (so learned the mistakes that were common and how to avoid them). learned how to bill my time. studied a lot. felt busy.

Wasn't a good fit for me and barely had any work to do, so I spent the extra time taking as many exams as I can, refining my tech skills, and doing extra stuff at work in order to make myself more marketable when I jumped ship after that first year.
