Everyone is different, so you shouldn't put too much weight on other peoples' opinions. I think its more important to ask what do YOU want do, and do you have the skill sets to become successful at it. If you want to go into politics, you need good people skill and self-marketing skills. So, it might be worth your time to ask employees, in industries you're trying to get into, how they like the job and what skills are needed to be successful.

That is a great point, Bobbo. I have certainly been asking myself what I ultimately want to do, and talking through it with others. However, I also think that it is helpful learning about others who may have had a similar journey from actuarial to something else.

And about my allusion to "public policy" ... I didn't mean to suggest that I would be interested in a career in politics. I meant "public policy" more as the discipline in which quantitative methods are used to analyse the effectiveness of programs and such. (Admittedly, I don't much about it.)
