Default Asking interviewer how many people are you interviewing?

Is this an appropriate question to ask on a final onsite interview? I'm just curious to see what they're looking at.

I wouldn't find it inappropriate. The answer I give may or may not be accurate, though. I'd probably just say "a handful" and leave it at that.

"A handful" is probably as good an answer as you're going to get. There's a good chance that it's an unknown number as more candidates may be rolling in, but nobody knows if/how many. Not every interview process is structured like the NBA playoffs.

I don't think it's inappropriate, but it's not a very good question, nor is it a good use of time. You should probably focus more on the actual role and how it will develop over time.

I've definitely asked it before.

I also always ask why a position is open: is it a new position, or did somebody get a promotion, or did somebody leave?

It doesn't take much time to ask or get it answered, so it's not a waste of time.

If you're trying to connect to the interviewer on a more personal level I can see it being a good use of 10-20 seconds depending on the followup (how many more today, am I your last before lunch, etc) and the social abilities of both interviewer and interviewee. But I can also seeing it turning real awkward real quick.

I wouldn't be asking this as the last item - people remember beginnings and endings the most, and I wouldn't want them to be associating this question with me.

What if its a small company (<30 people). They should know the answer.... would handful still be the expected response? Also what does handful generally mean? <5?

I would put it it at the end when you're standing up/shaking hands/walking out. More of a small talk item.

Probably same response. In this situation, "a handful" is a blowoff response. It can mean anything. In other situations I would say it's 5ish or less.
