Default Similarity between SOA Samples and Real

I can't find a recent thread on this... but how comparable is the real test to the SOA 305 in terms of difficulty?

You should realize there is not necessarily any good answer to this, as potentially everyone taking the exam in a given session gets different questions, all drawn from the same pool. So Joe might say "my exam was harder" and Bill might say "my exam was easier" and both be right. Ignoring the complications posed by the presence of pilot questions, if Joe's exam was harder he will need fewer correct answers to pass. Possibly the same number of correct answers to pass if his exam was only very slightly more difficult.

My experience was at most one, and if you're lucky two, questions on the exam that were either identical in nature (with different numbers) or on the same level of difficulty as any of the SOA practice problems.

For me I always thought the SOA sample questions turned out to be a waste of time. My exams always seemed harder, though I did always work them. Your mileage may vary.

As Gandalf was describing, if you get questions that are relatively harder than everyone else, the pass mark can decrease, and vice versa if easier.

Kind of a crap shoot to some extent, you do the best you can and keep chugging along until you get the pass.
