Yeah I was trying to enhance your point. Sorry if you got the wrong impression. I'm a bit testy from dealing with a few too many willfully stupid fox news watching* dumbasses.

The name of its alleged origin came first, based on where the first reported cases literally came from. Its scientific name didn't come until later.

The same thing can have a scientific and an informal name.

I agree. I hate it when people respond to perceived hate and assumptions with actual hate and assumptions. Good thing neither of us is doing that.

I think it might end up being formally known as SARS2.

"Spanish" isn't a race, so I suppose "Spanish flu" isn't exactly racist.

I don't know whether the origin of the term was descriptive or meant to distance that horrible disease from us. I think history and usage matter as to whether the term was bigoted when it was popularized. I don't know the history or the context.

Stressing the "chinese"ness of this pandemic seems bigoted at this point, though.

Is Wuhan virus better?

Wuhan virus was intended descriptively, and I don't think it was racist. Now that the official name is covid-19 or SARS-CoV-2 and the most common nickname is coronavirus, it might well be racist to insist on using "Wuhan" instead of those names, however.

[nit-picking]
"Coronavirus" isn't exactly a nickname. It's the Anglicized version of the Latin name of the "family" of viruses with particular characteristics.

It'd be like saying that "canine" is the nickname of a wolf.
[/nit-pick]

IIRC, it turns out that many of the things we call "catching a cold" is also a variation of a coronavirus.

The current situation actually puts me in mind of War of the Worlds.
