Default Reopening Thread: Covid-19

A place for all your reopening comments and questions.

Kentucky and Indiana have started reopening

The government's guidance is pretty thorough with respect to businesses and public spaces, but as the parent of a tween and a teen there is next to nothing out there on what they can and can't do with their friends. Both are chomping at the bit to see their friends, but it seems like my wife and I are going to have to navigate that by ourselves.

Questions include:

When to have friends over to the house?

When can my son go riding around with his buddies?

When can people play ball and stuff outside (summertime staples)?

Can we take friends to the lake?

Learn to use one of the many free video chat platforms, and give your kids a private place to video chat with their friends. They can play board games or video games at the same time.

By "riding" do you mean bicycles, or in a car? They can ride bikes together now. Have them wear a face covering and stay 6 feet away from each other -- a good idea if they are on bicycles anyway.

Ball and stuff is dicey, because everyone touches the same ball. And I don't think you can trust kids not to touch their faces. That being said, baseball, softball, kickball, soccer, and hockey seem less risky than American football or basketball, because the players aren't usually in each other's faces in the first ones. Hopefully your state offers some guidence.

Take friends to the lake? I'd want to know something about how long the virus lives in fresh water and how efficiently it's transmitted first, personally.

I can't imagine wearing a face mask for biking.

I see people doing it every day in my neighborhood. They aren't bicycling super hard, and they aren't wearing super efficient face coverings. But they are wearing the sort of cloth mask that's become common and biking around town with friends. Lots of small groups of teens doing that.

I can barely stand a face mask just to go to the supermarket, let alone biking.

NYC isn't opening any time soon, but I am curious about things like haircuts. I don't envision being able to safely get a haircut until they have a vaccine. you can't social distance when getting your hair done and you also can't wear a mask. thus it is out for a long time.

our collective hair is gonna look awful.

Get somebody who will do a house call to cut your hair, and have them wear a mask. Still some risk of exposure, but at least you're not exposed to the other employees and customers in the salon.

right now i'm fine with just letting my hair grow to infinity. I might be okay with that for the next year too. if i get a haircut, i want to go to my regular stylist. i'm picky and I like what she does.

My hair is the longest it's been since probably when I needed my parents to pay for a haircut.
