keg of beer
his new year's resolution was to cut back a bit on the drinking... seems to be starting off well based on the numbers so far

3/13/2013: 135.2 - lowest I've been since July 2011!
10/2/2013: 140.4
Reporting this so I have a baseline to come back to in November.

5/25/2017: 140.0.
1/8/2020: 138.0
I am at the weight I was in early 2013. In the years between 2013 and 2017, I went to my highest (non pregnant) weight of 150, and stayed at 145 for quite a while before making my way down the scale. I'm hoping to get to the mid 130s by summer, and staying there the rest of this decade (I'm in my late 40s). Not at all sure what might happen when menopause hits, because women in my family tend to get obese during that time.

Starting keto diet today. Will probably have to break it on Saturday and reset on Sunday.

Default Lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks. Didnít I add any new muscles?

Hello folks, I had a quick question.

I started lifting weights exactly 3 weeks ago. This was after a 2 year break. I weighted 178 lbs 3 weeks ago. After very accurate calorie and macro tracking on myfitnesspal (targeting 1.5 lbs weight lose per week), my weight is now exactly 174 lbs. I used the same machine and weighed myself at the same time of the day.

During last 3 weeks I regularly did strength training and got progressive overloads. I’m at 180 lbs squats and 110 lbs bench press. I also made sure to take 100 grams of protein everyday and stayed at 1500 calorie level everyday. My maintenance, considering my activity level, is about 2250 calories.

So I lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks. My confusion is, I should have gained at least 2-3 lbs of muscles due to noob gains, high protein intake and a regular strength/hypertrophy workout schedule. So that means I lost 6-7 lbs of fat.

How is it possible to lose 6-7 lbs when I targeted calorie intake for losing 4.5 lbs? Does it mean I didn't gain any new muscles? I know I’m looking at a small time period and there might be many factors in play, but I just wanted to check so that I can adjust my expectations going forward accordingly.

Noob gains aren't generally due to adding new muscle, but getting better engagement and usage out of the existing muscle, i.e. you're retraining that muscle how to manage a heavy load, something which it had forgotten about.

Really? So noob gains basically means simply increasing the amount of weight and not adding new muscles?

This study says otherwise:

https://www.sciencedaily.com/release...0127132741.htm

Quote:
The researchers divided their subjects into two groups. Both groups went on a low calorie diet, one with higher levels of protein than the other. The higher-protein group experienced muscle gains -- about 2.5 pounds -- despite consuming insufficient energy, while the lower protein group did not add muscle.
