Default Is your office temperature comfortable?

poll

There is a pre-debate debate going on in NY over the room temperature for the debate. Science says their is some sexism behind having office temperatures very low.

Quote:
For 50 years air conditioning in commercial buildings has been set using the Standard 55 guidelines. But many workplaces aren't staffed solely with 40-year-old men dressed in 60s business suits, and that's left women out in the cold, as Dr Karl Kruszelnicki argues.

Worldwide, sales of air conditioning units go up by about 20 per cent each year.

But apart from the cost and energy involved in cooling our buildings, modern air conditioning set-ups all have a fundamental flaw—they are sexist.

You see, men love aircon, but women often shiver.

I'm a man. I think our temp is fine, maybe a tad chilly some days in the winter. The women in the office do suggest that it is too cold. I wear a t-shirt and shorts or jeans in the office though, so they weren't exactly designing the standards for me. I do typically prefer it on the cool side.

It's a bit cold for me but not too bad. More generally though I'd rather it be too cold and need to put on a sweater than be too hot and feel sticky/sweaty. Much easier to add clothing in the office than remove it

Male here. I'm usually comfortable at my current office, though I do get cold here occasionally and definitely have at some prior workplaces. What jumped out at me was the first comment on the article page:

Quote:
I have this entirely wrong! I come from an office environment where the men shiver because the women keep it so low because the women set it so low. This is because they are over weight and feel hot all the time.
This sounds very familiar to me. While I do hear the occasional (and typically thin) woman suffering through cold office temps, my experience has been that these complaints are drowned out by overweight women complaining about how hot it is. It seems to me that the group the AC standard is biased against isn't so much "women" as it is "non-overweight people who wear weather-appropriate clothing." Maybe that group leans more female than male because reasons, but I think there's more to this than just a gender gap.

Tends toward too warm, especially in winter. Temperature at my desk routinely reaches 78 in mid afternoon.

My comfort level varies based on the weather: if it's a sunny day it generally feels comfortable. If it's not, my office is a little on the cold side in summer and winter. If I have maintenance make changes I think I'll be roasting on sunny days. I keep a fleece in my office for cooler winter days.

many of the women here have blankets at their desk. Im usually OK, but sometimes think its cold. I am a skinny guy; sometimes in the winter I just never feel warm.

I would rather it be a bit too cold than a bit too hot.

I can throw on a sweater or an additional layer.

I can only take so much off. This is further restricted if I'm to remain professional as well.

Our office isn't even the same temperature throughout. There are rooms that are freezing, and rooms that are uncomfortably warm. I keep a zip up hoodie at my desk, I'm not pulling on/off a sweater to adjust.

This too. I mentioned earlier that our office temp is fairly comfortable, and that statement applies to most working areas. Our lunch room, on the other hand, is notoriously frigid.
