Default Drum thread

Drum set arrived in the mail Saturday. Took me way longer to get it assembled than I thought. There were a LOT of pieces!

Sunday was working on some "beginner" type beats from youtube and a couple books I got, and also trying to learn the drum part to "Living on Prayer." It's actually not all that hard, which is good, because even as easy as it is, it's just a lot to keep track of.

I will keep you all posted.

Man, it feels like way longer than a week since I started this thread.

I've spent this week just trying to learn some basic beats with a metronome. This book is pretty good. Reading music on drumkit is kind of a mind-****, but I figure it will become second nature eventually.

I gave up on trying to nail "Living on a Prayer," there's just too much going on. Instead, I found some cool backing tracks on youtube that I've been messing around with. This one, for example, I found just by googling "disco drum playalong," and it's pretty amazing. I reflect again how differently my life might have turned out if I'd had access to this kind of technology back in the mid 90's, when I was learning to play guitar. I make a mental note to remind myself to remind my kids yet again to be grateful for this age of wonders they're living in.

I've ordered a dedicated metronome and practice pad off Amazon for drilling fundamentals even when my roommate is asleep. I've also signed up for a one-week trial of "Drumeo," which looks like a pretty amazing resource. $30/month if you pay by the month. I'll probably subscribe at the end of the trial.

Rock Band had an excellent drum simulation. I never played much real drums, but I think it did a pretty good job of approaching the real thing, without the rolls and left-pedal. I really wish those games were still popular. I blame millennials.

I think my first rhythm game was Donkey Konga on Game Cube. Love that game. That's also where I learned to unironically love the songs "Boombastic" and "All Star."
