I'll retire from UT-Austin on 31 August 2010. I expect that my successor as Director of the program will be completely settled by the middle of this fall and that he will join our faculty in fall 2009 so as to overlap with me for a year. If we hire whom we expect (an ASA/PhD with experience developing a university actuarial program), he'll be a fine teacher with lots of energy and enthusiasm for working with the undergraduate and graduate students and improving the program.

What benefits are there to pursuing a Master's degree at UT? I currently have passed the first two exams and am working on the MFE. I have wanted to go back to school and am wondering if this is something I should consider.

What are the typical requirements to get into the Act.Sci program and how competitive is it?

tia.

As do almost all Master's programs in the US, our program focuses on the content of the preliminary exams, along with related material on risk management, finance, et cetera; some programs may be offering classes covering some of the SoA FAP material, as we are considering doing.

This means that people that have already gone beyond the content of Exams P/1 and FM/2 have too few classes for them to take here to constitute a Master's program. So we don't admit people that have studied a significant amount of material beyond that for P/1 and FM/2.

For info on requirements, see http://www.utactuary.info/MA.html .

We usually have about 40 applicants, nearly half of whom are denied admission quickly as clearly over- or under-qualified. We usually end up with about 8-12 top candidates. We offer financial support as Teaching Assistants in Mathematics to the top four (most accept); we may offer admission without financial support to the remaining top candidates in case they wish to come on their own (some of whom may end up getting TA support for occasional semesters, depending on Department needs).
