I'm curious. Why was this thread moved? And if the topic was intended for all to participate in, why wasn't the thread title changed at the same time?

I had originally refrained from posting my opinion, since it was in the P/C forum and directed to CAS members. As a member of the SOA, I was pretty annoyed that our president would put forth such a dumb idea. Along with other dumb stuff I have seen lately from the SOA.

<insert emoticon giving a deep sad sigh>

I was surprised to hear merger talk in the President's inauguration speech. So I went back and read his election message. http://www.soa.org/leadership/electi...h/default.aspx
There is nothing in there about wanting to merge the organizations. I agree with Bruce that he sounds like he wants to be president of the AAA.
Here is my favorite part from the second to last paragraph:
“We are fortunate to have a very talented executive director and dedicated staff to oversee the "day to day" operations of the SOA. We don't need the SOA presidential officers to interfere with their efforts. Or attempt to reorganize the SOA staff.”
I wonder if the nominating committee new something we didn’t know?

I dunno, but this seems like an odd place for it if you want any one in the CAS to look at it. Isn't this usually the place for SoA elections stuff?

It was moved by the OP, not mods. For now, I'm moving it back to the original location. If the OP really wants it moved, the OP should change the title.

Actuarial societies in the rest of the world are not divided as per industry (Life v/s P&C). They just have industry wise sections in the same society.

So …

Have CAS & SOA been able to achieve something unique for their respective industries which other actuarial societies (for example the ones in UK, Australia, or even Canada etc.) have not been able to achieve?

If yes then .. If there had there been a single actuarial society in US, what would have been the impact of that on the unique achievement? Conducive / not-conducive? Cost effective / not-cost effective? etc. etc.

Please don’t take my questions as my stand in support of or against the proposal.

Yeah, that's really not going to work.

Is it possible that nobody at all has commented yet on the SOA Blog posting of Brad's speech? Or am I just not seeing the comments for some reason? I'm tempted to post about what a terrible idea it is, but then I'll be blamed when others post the same thing.

I am just a CAS Affiliate Member, so I cannot vote in the CAS, but I think that this is a really dumb idea. I will vote against it as a FSA and MAAA if SOA and/or AAA ever offer a vote. I agree with the notion that, were this to become reality, everyone would suffer. I also think the CAS would get the worst of it.

What is it about so many SOA Presidents pushing bizarre ideas, some multiple times? Quick examples:

FEM
BIG TENT
MERGERS
FREQUENT DISRUPTION OF EXAM SYSTEMS

I'm sure other examples can be found.

What was the BIG TENT? For the record, I was in full support of the BOUNCY HOUSE.

I'll summarize the "big tent" as letting more people call themselves actuaries -- i.e., letting them into our tent. CERA is a step in that direction, except that CERAs are mostly going to people who would be actuaries, anyway, rather than admitting "new" people. One might argue that FEM would contribute to the "big tent" by admitting people who couldn't pass our exams.
