My senior year when I won All-Area athlete of the year. There was a banquet to for all the finalists and they announced the male and female winners. This was only out of about 12 schools, but still felt pretty awesome.

My track team was resting some of our better mid-distance runners in a smaller meet so I got to anchor the 4x800m relay, and I was able to come back from behind and go from 4th to winning it. I vividly remember noticing how scrawny the competition was (our team did more cross training and I was always relatively meaty for a runner), and that I had the Black Sabbath song "Never Say Die" stuck in my head.

Jack of all trades, master of none. My jock friends called me a nerd and my math friends called me a dumb jock. Probably why I never had any "best" friends but had lots of acquaintances.

The thing that ultimately had the most profound effect on my life from school was meeting the girl that eventually became my wife.

Have you been together since you then or did you find each other again later?

Met her in 7th grade. Our first date was senior prom. We got serious about a year or two after that. Married after she graduated and she got a job as an actuary.

We had a "Who Wants to Win Spirit Night?" contest (think Millionaire) and about half the school (500 or so kids) was there. I got picked to represent the seniors and ended up winning the whole thing. Standing ovation and $100 gift card which turned into a backyard ping-pong table that was a nice party piece for the whole summer.

Funny thing is the kid who put it all together was pissed I won (he was convinced I got one wrong but was overruled by the teachers, don't mess with my Star Wars knowledge)... and ended up becoming an actual game show host for GSN (and other TV gigs).
