Default DOD official slams US law firms for defending Guantanamo detainees

Quote:
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs Charles "Cully" Stimson has set off a firestorm of protest by publicly questioning the propriety of some of the country's top law firms representing Guantanamo Bay [JURIST news archive] detainees. In an interview [recorded audio] on Federal News Radio [media website] Thursday on the fifth anniversary of the US military prison, Stimson predicted that "when corporate CEOs see that those firms are representing the very terrorists who hit their bottom line in 2001 those CEO's are going to make those law firms choose between representing terrorists or representing reputable firms." The former Navy lawyer said "It's shocking...The major law firms in this country...are out there representing detainees."

Can you believe these unAmerican law firms? Probably a bunch of bedwetting liberals. The gall they have - to assume these people are innocent until proven guilty!?! How unAmerican is that? John Adams would be rolling over in his grave. Facts are stu...bborn things.

What crimes have they committed that should be resolved in a U.S. court of law, versus, say, a military tribunal or a bullet in the back of the head (the latter being the normal punishment for violations of the laws of war and the Geneva Convention).

I mean, these people aren't U.S. citizens, and they weren't captured in America. Why should the U.S. courts be involved? It makes as much sense as trying them in Poland's courts.

Separate issue: if a corporation chooses not to do business with a law firm that represents abortion clinic bombers or Dr. Kevorkian, is that okay?

No.
Are you familiar with John Adams' role in the Boston massacre?

Until proven otherwise, they haven't committed a crime.

Why go to all that trouble to have them detained in Cuba if we are going to coddle them with US lawyers?
