Default US Attorneys being fired left and right...

Anyone notice that there have been a slew of firings (or forced resignations) in US Attn's offices around the country.

Most being fired are, or were, investigating republicans. Now Rove's opposition researchers, along with others, are being installed. I suppose they want subpeona powers in the hands of their political stooges, but it's not really clear yet.

tpmmuckraker.com has been writing about it a bit, so you can find more details there. I think they are up to 8 or so.

Specter apparently slipped a provision into the patriot act renewal giving bush the power to do this.

Quote:
"I can confirm for you that yes, it was a Specter provision," a spokesperson for the senator wrote to me in an email earlier today, responding to repeated inquiries. Earlier we reported that Specter had been fingered for the last-minute change, made in a select Republicans-only meeting after the House and Senate had voted on earlier versions.
Just thought I'd raise the topic to see if any read any interesting takes, or had any insights...

That's unlikely. The first mass firing of US attorneys I've ever heard of was at the beginning of the Clinton administration.

There are some current US Attys who deserve firing IMHO, particularly the one who prosecuted border guards for doing what we all think should be their jobs -- and achieved two 11+ year sentences. Alas, the accounts say that the administration is backing this gal.

You can probably find the details on this on www.frontpagemagazine.com. I don't think I can get there from work.

I think it is common for a pres to pick the them initially. I may be wrong, but I thought it was similar to cab. positions.

It is rare to put your top political opposition researcher in that role, though.

My understanding is quite otherwise. i.e. US attys are supposed to be nonpartisan. Of course they can't be stopped from quitting.
