The only thing required for a high ratio is that two people with diverging opinions are passionate enough about their argument to not let the other "win" (frequently involves Laocöon). If the ratio is REALLY high, that's because everyone else has lost interest.

Of course, some people do a lot of replying in their own threads, so that skews the numbers.
Years ago on that other website there was a guy who ran Perl against all the threads and calculated things like reply rates, threadkilling, and so on. Where are our Perl geniuses now?? Oh burn - talk about an old threadbump.
