A lot of insurance companies will not insure a house where there is no one living.

If she's insuring her home and contents in that home, but not residing there, that's a red flag that the home is not being taken care of. In this day of our lovely economy, it's also a pretty big red flag that possible fraud may exist or be coming...(move out and set the house on fire).

You will have to try to find another policy.

I guess I was assuming that she wanted to try to cover it from stuff like burning down, if possible. The insurance company not continuing the same policy makes perfect sense, even if you don't know what J.T. points out in her post.

Sorry...more details.

Owns house...lives in apartment. House in empty and my brother is doing repairs to get it on the market. The internets tell me there is some sort of vacant home insurance that is quite a bit more costly than normal home owners insurance.

Probably should have talked to her insurance company at the time of the move but got lost with all the other crap going on and I didn't even think about.

Yeah, you might be able to talk to the agent and explain you totally forgot to mention it, and eat the extra cost. You can get it as low as a 20% increase in some places. Good luck.
