Default Boomers maiming and dying

Just want to know if any actuary has seen data similar to this, or are boomers doing the same thing that all 40+ and 50+ year olds do, and that now it's an issue because of the boomer gen's size.

Perhaps its because we as a society have been able to insulate people from the consequences of their own stupidity more than in prior generations, but eventually it catches up with you. (e.g. you can be saved from an O.D. more readily than in the past, so we don't pop off as readily at 18 from a drug related mishap. But after 30 years of drug related mishaps, the body and/or mind gives out.)

Just a thought.

a troubling number are dying from causes that have marked the generation since the 1960s
If they were doing it in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's why do they think they would stop now?

Also, any article about boomers (see Newsweek's once-a-month 'Boomer Files,' which I usually skip right over -- and I'm a boomer) will draw the eyes of that larger slab of demography.
This was probably on the front page of many Scripps Sunday newspapers.

Actuarial questions:
1. Is the rate of death different for Boomers from past generations' at similar ages?
2. What about rate of death by type of death? Article states that suicide rates are up for boomers at all stages of life, but at 12,000 per year, that means maybe 1,000-2,000 additional deaths.
3. Drug-related deaths also do not account for all that many deaths. 29,000 total for one year, and boomers were 14,000. Another fedw thousand more than expected.

Just wondering if it is big enough of a deal to warrant front-page Sunday news. Anything else going on in the world, or does the selling of a newspaper trump the actual content?
