Default Real Estate Question

How do I find the owner of a parcel of land or the owner of a house/structure?

I know it's public info, but I can't seem to find it anywhere on the government sites

EDIT: Costs me a dollar to get the info

EDIT^2: They don't have info on commercial property, not even apartment buildings

should be able to track this information down on your local county tax assessor's website. they typically aren't that user friendly, but with a little work you should be able to find it.

There used to be a way to do this before the internet. I wonder if it still works?

You see, you would actually go, in person, to the seat of the appropriate government. There you would find people who you would ask, "How do I find out who owns the apartment building at 123 Main Street?" They in turn would direct you to the correct office where the information would be on file. You might call first, just to be sure you are showing up at the right office building.

What exactly made you think that "public record" was defined as "governments at all level need to spend their resources in building user friendly web sites"?

What makes you think that that enormous $1 fee is so outrageous as to deserve your ridicule?
