About Amnesty International

Founded in London in 1961, Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with over 1.8 million members worldwide. Amnesty International undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights. Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the U.S. Section of Amnesty International.

AIUSA is not an independent organization, it is fully a part of AI. If AIUSA is a bunch of political hacks, that surely does reflect poorly on the rest of the organization.

And if I am anti-Ruritanian, but publish all of my anti-Ruritanian nonsense under a different login call "Pseud - Ruritania", does that not reflect poorly on me as a whole?

But I am glad to see that you've changed your mind and now agree that the originally-posted poll was political bunk.

The Movement
Amnesty International has a varied network of members and supporters around the world. At the latest count, there were more than 2.2 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in every region of the world. Although they come from many different backgrounds and have widely different political and religious beliefs, they are united by a determination to work for a world where everyone enjoys human rights.

AI is a democratic, self-governing movement. Major policy decisions are taken by an International Council made up of representatives from all national sections.

AI's national sections and local volunteer groups are primarily responsible for funding the movement. No funds are sought or accepted from governments for AI's work investigating and campaigning against human rights violations.

Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is one of many country sections that make up Amnesty International worldwide. AIUSA members elect an 18 member national board of directors to represent them. The board of directors employs AIUSA's executive director, who manages the staff. The staff works to serve and supports the members.
1. I don't see anything there about the national sections of Amnesty focusing on the abuses in their own nations.

2. I find it kind of funny that they specifically mention independence from any religion, and one of their links is to "Instant Karma: the campaign to save Darfur." I guess "Instant Jihad" and "Saviors on Mount Zion" just weren't nearly as catchy slogans in the focus groups. Not saying that Buddhism isn't a religion of peace, but, well, it is a religion.

Also, I stand by my assertion that doesn't the group "Amnesty International" tell you that it is biased?

The rest of your post I'll check out later.

But I had to respond to this - I never thought anything different - see my agree with Sam that this cartoon/poll/whatever cheapened AI's stated mission.

The very report you state shows the inherent bias against the US. The page for the US also seems to be about twice as long as Zimbabwe's, but I didn't actually print out to count, so that could be off.
I dunno - the report seems to start off with Africa -

I note that you skipped posting the summary on the Death Penalty, where all 6 countries noted were mentioned by name.

If the US is the only country falling into a classification, then it should be the only one noted

Because Africa is first alphabetically. Come on now.

You weren't claiming that it had been put up by some rogue blogger, and did not reflect on the official organization at all?

Also, the only lists they seem to have are the ones with the USA on them. Why not list the nine not signing countries? (Iran, Nauru, Palau, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Tonga , Niue and Vatican City --- some real human right paradigms in that group)

That post was made before I even bothered to look at what was actually on the website, realized it was probably a blogger, etc.

I agree. They should have.

Frankly, as the world's most powerful country, I'm not sure we can realistically expect to not be singled out...especially when our administration constantly claims we are the pinnacle and protector of liberty and democracy.

It's convenient for AI to single out an obvious hypocrite.
