How about the flap at Notre Dame ... George O'Leary was lying about his degree and his playing status ... For the past 21 years!

It wasn't reported on ESPN, but I heard that O'Leary also claimed on his resume that he passed two actuarial exams!

He got what he deserved. Falsifying a resume is a serious offense, in my opinion. How could he have thought that he'd ever be found out.

<do your best Jon Lovitz here> "Ummm, yeah, I lettered in football. Yeah. For three years! At New Hampshire. Yeah, that's the ticket! That was where I met my wife. Morgan Fairchild. Whom I've slept with!"

He did reap what he sowed, but hey, he's coached for Syracuse and Georgia Tech for quite a while. How has this just come out now?

most likely, they look at your past performance as a coach, the other stuff is window dressing, that nobody looks into.

However, the lying does show a flaw in character that is more important than the stuff on the resume which wouldn't have changed his ability to be hired if he didn't lie.

Who was the Major league baseball coach who quit after it was found out he lied about being a VietNam vet & lost all credibility with the players?

Yeah, thanks.

What is stupid is the stuff they are lying about never helped them get their jobs.

I agree that lying about being a Vet shouldn't have much weight in getting hired. But for O'Leary, getting that initial job in Syracuse, having a Master's degree can be a deciding factor in being hired.

this reminds of the former President of Transamerica Re, who was terminated after it was discovered that his resume falsely claimed that he had an MBA and was a member of the 1968 US Summer Olympic Team

I hired a football coach," said Frank Maloney, the Syracuse coach in 1980 when O'Leary joined his staff from a high school in nearby Liverpool, N.Y. "I wasn't hiring a classroom teacher. I'm sure he probably had to submit a form. I know I never saw it. I wouldn't have cared if he never lettered in college. I wouldn't have cared if he didn't have a degree."
