I believe Amelie will be mentioned often in Oscar discussions. A nice movie without a lot of depth...perfect fodder for Oscar voters.
It won't win though, because it's foreign and it won't be the first foreign film to win Best Picture. I believe Ali may be mentioned also. If not for best picture, at least for Best Actor.

Didn't Chariots of Fire win? Admittedly, it wasn't very foreign.

What about the Oscar for best actress in a bukkake?

You're right, I checked and Chariots of Fire did win Best Picture.
I guess I should have said no foreign language film (not english) has ever won best picture. It would give American directors a superiority complex, I guess. I seems that they like to nominate 'em but can't bring themselves to vote for 'em. |

Do American (or English-language) films win "Best Picture"-type prizes in, say, Brazil? Are they even allowed to compete?

Foreign or American, I think the Oscars are VERY subjective. I have an Oscar book which says that (in most major Oscar categories)the people who vote on who win the Oscars are under no obligation to watch any part of the film they're voting on. All in all, I think the Oscars make good entertainment, increase salaries and make good trivia. I generally don't think they're indicative of the truth.

I don't really know...
For the big foreign festivals that give awards, like Cannes or Toronto, American pics are definitely in the competition. But that's more specialized. The point of the festival is not to award pictures, it's to screen pictures to pick up distributors. They have a different raison d'etre...they aren't about self-congratulation and back-slapping. I'm not sure about award shows in particular, in places like, say, Brazil.
