I should, add, Beeboo, that up to the time I lost work access to the Reef, I did not see it as a place rife with the various bigotries I noted elsewhere. Partly because it was a ridiculous place where one expected/expects to see some degree of this, where nearly everything is done as a joke (or as NSFW material), and where shock- and anti-social- humor are part of the culture. What wasn't there, except perhaps during the Cavey era, was a lot of attacking of posters by other posters, nor a lot of objecting to posts that were made (unless they were attacking posts).

For reasons I won't go into here, I do feel considerable disagreement witrh "well if you don't like what goes on here, find another forum."
But I CAN see the sense in "well if you don't like what that subforum (or thread) is for, don't go there".

I don't see into the future - first, I can look at various thread titles and figure out what is likely to happen. [especially when I see who started the thread]

Second, I will look at threads quickly, and I can tell if it's interesting or boring, or just people being annoying.

Third, I actually have to respect a person to be able to be offended by what they say. Otherwise, I just think they're an asshat, and move on.

The first two are pretty much your examples of how you can see into the future. As to the third, I have to respect a person to be hurt by what they say. I don't have to respect anybody in order to be frightened or disturbed by their conduct or to be troubled by what nonsense they are propagating to other suggestible people about me or some other innocent person.

Would now be a good time for me to make a joke? I've got a good one about old people.

Ok, it's just that I've been online for a very long time, and have learned to filter a lot of crap.

Also, I am in NYC. If I got disturbed by every dumbass thing I heard on the subway, I would have left years ago. The AO is not that bad compared to real life stuff I've overheard.

[but of course, I'm not going in every subforum here. I stay out of Political, Sports, and the Reef most of the time, and maybe that's the AO sewers.]

I am experienced in NYC and its subways. I've been violated on the subway, and had nearly a carful of riders laughing in endorsement of a nutcase hate-preachers triumphant zingers and denouncement of me as a white person -- which IS a frightening and disturbing experience. I've also once in a while taken action to help some other person on the subway, rather than simply averting my gaze from somer situation, and wouldn't be too keen on having a mob of baboons surrounding me for ridicule, as can happen in the AO. I've been bullied, harrassed, and even lied about in my workplace, and met up with either hapless or ultimately indifferent HR types. I am not crazy about seeing this sort of stuff play out in some sort of abstracted version here, for me or for others.

This not a matter of being offended by every dumbass thing one hears on the subway. I did eventually leave NYC but for reasons much more practical than subway riders offending me -- though I don't miss the smell.
