Think about this one the next time you vote no on a school referendum to raise taxes in order to hire more teachers and expand a school. You will quickly realize that it really isnt a free market when you put it to a vote.
It is a free market. Each community is made up of consumers. If your community doesn't pay enough for schools, you move to another community. If you don't think people take into consideration school districts when they buy homes, you must be nuts. The other competition is private schools. If you aren't satisified with the quality of the public school, or the fact that the public school is sterile and godless then you can pay even more dollars for a cadilac instead of a volkswagen.

I suppose Moe thinks everyone should drive cadilacs and eat filet for dinner. Socialists.

Most people do look at the school district when they buy their home. They also look at the current tax burden. Also, once their children are out of school, do you expect them to be the good hearted person and vote yes for the kid down the street?

It is called being realistic.

Over the long run, I may give yout argument consideration. People must be mobile enough to move to different school districts if their neighbors don't support the school. Budget problems can come up quickly over the short run.

Also, moving is much more expensive than the additional tax burden, especially when you look at a difference of 10-20% in home value by crossing a road to get into a different district vs what may be 5% increase on a much smaller annual payment. Often it isn't feasable.

So I guess you agree then, it is a free market. Anyway, here's a novel approach for you, why should the old people have to pay to send your kids to school? People who need services should pay for their own services. Public education is nothing but an excuse for pork barrel politicians to send money to cronies anyway. The whole thing should be shut down and privatised.

So you think that families who can't afford to send their kids to school shouldn't get school? Is it really socialist to have public schools? Is it socialist to have government pay for highways? Ever heard of the free rider problem? Why should old people pay for schools? Because it was subsidized for them by old people when their kids were in school. What about people with no kids? Well, if they really want they can move to a country with no schools, just like families in areas with bad schools can move to an area with good schools right? Do you really want to live in a country where poor kids can't get an education? Are you sure you understand the social concequences of that? Any idea what kind of crime would result from all these uneducated kids when they grew up? If you think crime in poverty ridden nieghborhoods is bad now.....No matter how conservative you are, some services have to be provided publicly because of the free rider problem. It is in everyone's best interest to have basic education publicly available to everyone. If you don't understand that, wow......

It would be difficult to implement and eliminating it would be inequitable. You pay for education through years of property taxes, maybe 500-1000 bucks a year. Privatising it would place an enourmous burden on a young couple who is stretched to make a house payment, stretched to provide for the kids, and would be further stretched to pay 5 times as much for their kids to go to school. Also, you would have the problem of couples who paid in taxes for only a few years, their kids are out of school, and they would cease paying off what they have used.

The system is only currently unfair for those who do not have the average 2.5 kids.

You are truly insane. You should move to the 3rd world countries that you want to emulate. Don't try to bring mine down.

Not everyone needs an education. Most of the education dollars are wasted on those who dont need it. Why do you need a PhD to flip burgers, bring me and TDA a round of Becks beer at our table, slide down the pole on stage or to clean our hotel bed sheets?

Nice to see Satan getting some work.

Do you realize your proposal punishes 5 and 6 year old children? Can you honestly look at a 6 year old who comes from a poor family, look at him or her face to face and say sorry kid, I don't think you deserve to go to school because your parents are poor. You're bound to a life of poverty, and that's just too bad for you. When they tell you they wanted to be a doctor you're going to reply "That's nice, you should have been born rich, maybe it would have happened"

I can't honestly believe that's how you truly feel.
