Missing Baby Found After Apparent Hospital Abduction

SANFORD, Fla. — Hospital officials in central Florida say a 1-day-old baby apparently abducted from the infant unit has been found safe.

Central Florida Regional Hospital spokesman Craig Bair says an alarm alerted hospital officials to the abduction at about 2 p.m. Friday. Bair says the baby has now been located.

Police in Sanford say they found two women with a baby that matched descriptions. They are working to conclusively identify the baby.

The hospital was briefly locked down while authorities searched the grounds.
Yes, I know. Parody threads belong in the reef, but it's funnier here.

The maternity ward where I gave birth had more security than any other hospital setting I've ever been in. Apparently, baby-stealing is a real problem. Not a super-common one, but real. That risk didn't outweigh the advantages of a hospital setting for me, but I actually think that could be a (minor) reason to have a home birth.

I won't bore you all with a restating of the reasons why we chose to have a homebirth (four times (not for the same baby, of course)) (PM me if you really care), but there was a story a while back about a father who tried to carry his daughter out of the ward. (IIRC, he was estranged and may have been trying to steal the baby.) The electronic bracelet the child gets set off the alarm, locked the doors and shut down the elevator. He had nowhere to go. Here comes security with aparently no training--they shoot him with a taser while the child is still in his arms!! What were they thinking!? (thought I had started the thread on that story, but I can't find it. )
