You all are wrong.. That is a blatant misquote by other posters..

If you can't understand his logic/ intelligence, don't insult your own by saying that is a typo. The communication breakdown is on the readers' side!

Summary of arguments thus far:

TZK: I don't flinch so interviewers get turned off
Everyone: No one cares if you flinch.
TZK: People are turned off by overly intelligent people (aka me).
Everyone: No. They are turned off by the socially retarded.
TZK: You aren't smart. I am. You have no idea what you are talking about. That is logic.

O RLY? So suppose there is a group of people deciding on what to do about a volcano that is going to wipe out the village. A consensus has been reached, but you know for certain that the consensus is wrong. You attempt to explain it to them, but they block you out because they think you are being arrogant by disagreeing with them. You think you should let their ignorance destroy the village just so you don't "Go against the grain"?

Every issue that people deal with has real world consequences like this. If we didn't need to deal with real world problems there wouldn't be anything to disagree on to begin with. There is never a time where it is ok to ignore someone who disagrees with you because you don't want to admit you are wrong.

And this issue of right and wrong means something very clear. There is a larger force that has an interest in stopping this selfish and harmful behavior. In the village example the villagers have an interest in having the best information used to plan for their safety. This force wants to and should stop any such selfish behavior that could cause harm to them.

I stopped after sixty percent of the exam, because Bruce promised that if I got sixty percent of the questions right, I would pass!!!

Great thread.

There are (at least) two types of going against the grain:

1) to save the stupid ppl from the volcano
2) to be a total douche because you have an overinflated ego and you think you are saving ppl from a volcano when in fact you have nothing to offer anyone

I'll leave classifying TZK as an exercise for the reader.

No. It's not that you disagree with them.

It's how you do it. If you have EVER noticed that same sentiment here, it is because of the way you communicate it.

If you take the effort to be less haughty, maybe someone will truely emphatize/ care about your situation.

it's more about how you treat people than how they are insecure about your intelligence being grater than theirs. I personally would want to surround myself with people smarter than I am but I would not want a bunch of condescending judgmental people who are incapable of broad thinking. What made you choose actuarial science as your field? Why are we blessed with you instead of medical doctors, academia, or the law? Those all seem like better fits.
