Default Online application question

I'm about to apply for an entry level position online. At the end of the process there are 4 yes/no questions.

Can you work in the U.S. ....

Do you have experience...

and so on.

The answer should be yes to all of them. But I can only say yes to 3 of them honestly. Should I say yes to the 4th one? I have a feeling that if I don't answer 'yes' my resume/information will never get looked at.

What if they look at your resume, interview, offer you a position and then find out you lied on the application?

That's why you should try to steer clear of the HR Machine, whose sole purpose is to minimize the number of applications that have to be humanly reviewed.

Yes. (after I get a visa).

Seriously, if all I need is a TN1 visa, which is easy to acquire, should I answer yes or no?

The HM machine is a step down from how HR should work. A couple examples...

Not so long ago we had a student position open here. It was only declared a student position because we had to put some designation on it and a student was preferred but not nescessarily mandatory. Anyone then seeing the job advertisment logged into our web site. The question asked, have you successfully passed X number of exams. If you answer no, sorry. Thanks for playing. however, we also used a recruiter for the position and told them that a properly experienced person who has decided to stop taking exams is also acceptable. Through said recruiter we got a resume we liked and interviewed the guy. We wanted to offer him a position but he would still have to fill out the online application. So we had rework the position online just to hire the guy.

Second example: my wife was about to graduate from grad school with her masters. She heard of an entry level position she would be perfect for. The job wouldn't start until after graduation. One of the questions asked was do you have a masters degree. she was unsure what to do so she called the HR department at the college she was applying to. They told her that even though she would have a masters by the start date, if she didn't currently have one she had to answer no. This particular college required you submit your resume through this process and that paper resumes sent to the hiring manager/search committee would not be looked at. Before the age of technology she could have sent a resume, the search committee would have saw that she is about to earn her masters(she had a 4.0 there was no question she was going to get it) and may have selected her for an interview. The same college a year later asked for 2 years experience doing the exact job function. Similar and related functions did not qualify. So she couldn't apply for that one either. They then had to extend the search deadline because no applications had come in.

Number one job search rule you are taught is that even if you think you only meet most but not all of the job requirements, apply anyway, because very few people will actually meet all of them and often you will find you will at least get an interview. it doesn't apply now.

The problem is that you must present proof of a job offer to the border/airport in order to receive the TN-1 visa.

I'd also like to hear thoughts concerning this issue.

Create your own business. Hire yourself. Get the TN1 visa. After obtaining the "real job", then close your business, and go to work.
