You would know, so the "?" seems unnecessary. for the result.

I approve of Gandalf's plan. Wait for them to be out of range of the group and then attack them.

Wait until they're down from the mountain and out of sight of it to attack. (We use the climbing rope for our descent, of course, and we climb down where we climbed up, rather than right on the path of the gnolls.)
You could see the mountain from the farmer's field. Do you really want to trail them for a couple days before attacking? Or if you could get them near the stream you stopped at if they go near that is that far enough?

Ok.

You get down the mountain and trail them over a couple small rolling hills. Moving quietly, you hear them relaxing in a depression right up ahead. They are in enough of a depression that you cannot be seen by the mountain. They seem to have only gone a little ways before deciding to open up the drink again.

Great...let's attack.

Anyone got any idea on formation or some stuff. I don't really care, let's just sneak attack them, and quickly.

Seems like we should be able to manage a surprise round. Why doesn't our rogue get a view of exactly how they are arranged, complete with map? Then we can try to figure out how to attack. We have to figure out how close we can get before the surprise round starts, since we get only a move or a standard action in it (or a minor, but wouldn't want that, normally).

Alright, here it is. Everything is a gradual slope except just to the left of the gnolls which is about a 10-15 foot cliff.
