Yes, it would apply. If someone is going to sneak into your camp, taking a 10 probably wouldn't notify you in time, if at all. Some places if you don't expect any dangers, you could take a 10 until you feel or hear something out of place but usually not out in the wilds like this.

TNL's suggestion sounds good to me acually (from vaguely remembering the map from this morning).

Spoiler:
Perception modifier a 6, stealth a 10 if we need it
18, 3, 15, 13, 9, 8, 18, 15, 4, 8

I'll drop my idea and put in a vote for CL Eric's plan as well. That should give us the 3 votes for the route.

OK, we have 3 votes for the route. (Start in Y34:AA36; move along cliff until A:G, then zigzag upwards).

I need to know exactly where each person starts. The gnolls are going to attack us before we get to the cave, and once the battle starts there is no opportunity to rearrange (other than as move actions within the regular initiative order sequence).

Best case, we'll see them in time to be prepared and they won't get a surprise round. If all our perception checks miss them, they will get a surprise round. I need multiple perception checks from each person since there will be more than one chance to spot them before they would attack.

My thoughts are something like this:

G....S....C
V..........Gu
M....H....W

We might want to switch C and M depending on which way we think they are going to attak us from. Again, I'm just throwing out a suggestion, so if someone else has a wicked idea, lets do that.

I think that formation is as good as any. I like that the middle is open so that we can shift around our positions if the situation calls for it.

I'm good with it. I'll get some perception rolls done in a little bit. Need to head to a meeting first.

OK, we have a formation and a movement pattern. I haven't had a chance to evaluate perception rolls yet to see if we can spot the gnolls before they get a surprise attack. Once I start that evaluation (tonight, maybe), anyone who hasn't rolled perception won't get a chance, and it will be bad for the adventuring party if the gnolls aren't spotted first.

Minor exception: if Hteb posts her perception mod, the ADM will roll her perception checks, but not if she doesn't have her mod.

For anyone except Hteb who hasn't already posted them, that means 10 d20's (the first of which will be used as your initiative) and your perception mod.

Gimli's: 9,18,9,14,9,6,15,16,5,17. I should have saved most of those as attack rolls. Gimli's perception mod is 4.

It may be a good plan for someone to send a PMed reminder to anyone who hasn't posted.

wonk's d20's: 8, 3, 19, 16, 18, 15, 4, 7, 16, 4 I agree with Gimli...those would best have been saved for attack rolls. wonk's perception mod is 0.
