At my college, you were automatically undeclared your freshman year, though for all practical purposes most students had an unofficial major for purposes of assigning an advisor and schedule planning. I declared my unofficial major (biology) in my sophmore year, and then switched to math in my junior year, just in time to avoid live animal lab.

I started out as a drum major, then the bandleader told me to beat it so I ended up with a BS in applied math-econ (and other BS).

I started undeclared, but I always liked math so I made sure to take math classes (plus I was already considering possibly going the actuarial route). In my freshman calculus class, the professor was shocked that someone who was undeclared was taking calculus "just because they wanted to". I finally settled on a math major in my sophomore year....I think in the back of my mind, that's what I always planned to do, but I was afraid to commit.

I never wanted to be a math major. Too much obscure crap to learn... much like the physics major I dropped.

It's called flattery.
