This arose from a discussion here at work

I have heard it said that boys are always taller than their mothers. None of us have seen a counter example, so we thought we'd post it here.

Anybody?

Is this true?

I can think of no counter examples. I assume we are excluding 'little people.'

How old is your son? That might skew some of the data. :P

13. Why is that outside what was being asked?? I was quite shocked he has never seen a mother taller than her son.

I wondered if you weren't being cute. Give your son another couple of years and then report back to us, okay?

I'm sure it's not "never" ; it's just highly unlikely. The vast majority of women who are taller than their husbands are only an inch or so taller. Since the height differential between the average man and the average woman is something like 6 inches, this means her male offspring are likely to be shorter for a man than she is for a woman, but still taller than she is, because they are likely to be taller for a man than their father is.
This woman's daighters will likely be shorter than she is.

So if I want to breed a race of giants I have to marry a man taller than I am?
