I'm not an obama fan and will probably vote for the old guy. This seems kind of nice, but it rings hollow. Any other thoughts?

I don't think it rings hollow. It's clearly a political move - let's not lose sight of that. But I wouldn't call it hollow.

I think McCain recognizes the historic moment. CNN hit it on the head: he had 3 choices. Say nothing, continue negative, or do this. I think from a political standpoint, this was clearly the best option - but I also believe that McCain believes what he said there.

A cynical interpretation (which I've stolen from somewhere - forgot exactly) is that the message to voters is: "Hey, America - by nominating the black gentlemen you've already done something really, really, really, ridiculously historic. You can stop now. You don't need to actually, you know 'elect' him."

If I put it in correctly, its the McCain ad that says roughly:

we don't spend time to recognize accomplishments of our opponents. Congratulations Obama, how fitting that your nomination occur on this historic day. We'll be back at it tomorrow, but for tonight, congratulations and job well done.

"PS - Now voting for me will be historic, too. Just sayin'."
