Default Knife for Camping and Junk

I'm thinking Ka-Bar so far but I'm not sure how good it would be at say shaving wood or any fine work.

I have a Ka-Bar fighting style knife (cost me about $70-80) and though I haven't used it for the things you mentioned, I have no doubt that it could do the job. It's a pretty sweet knife.

I would recommend against using your kid's blunt tipped scissors

I recommend keeping all knives and scissors away from your junk.

Women would prefer 7" to 5.5".

Mine is 7" (insert a bad "that's what she said" joke here -- edit: seems like glassjaws semi beat me to it)

A link to the exact knife at Dick's: http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...ctId=1256700#1

it's a got good reviews and the price is not too bad either (plus free shipping). Apparently you have to watch out for rust (I've never put it away without cleaning it so I've not had this problem) but I can attest to the weight - it's solidly built and got great balance. Can you tell I like this knife?

For general camping use, I've never needed a long blade. The only time I want a blade longer than 4 inches or so is when I'm cooking, and then I don't want a camping knife.

But then, I'm not a hunter or fisher, so I don't know what you'd really want for cleaning your kills.

In our camping days, we had Gerber knives and we liked them.

I'm not sure a generic, all-around camping knife would be ideal for fine detail when carving - if you're really going to do some serious carving.
