Default facebook help

So I'm an old fogey (mid 30's) and I got a generic invite email from a friend to join facebook. And I thought why not and signed up. So while on facebook I saw an old college friend so I checked out his page. We've exchanged some emails recently but he lives across the country so I haven't seen him in many years. Anyway, I just got an email that said he's confirmed me as a friend. What does that mean? I think I will avoid facebook from now on. Somehow the idea of being "confirmed as a friend" bothers me. Is it just my age showing?

Thanks!

Uh, doesn't "confirmed as a friend" just mean that he now has you listed as being a friend of his. Nothing sinister, you are now included on his list of friends. It sounds as though he really is a friend so why would you be bothered?

friends can see the full page of other friends on facebook. you show up in his list of friends and he'll show up in your list. simple as that.

When you want to get automatic updates from a person and have them listed in your "friends" list, then you add them as your friend. In order to stop spammers and stalkers and such from keeping tabs on people, that request for "freinds" status has to be confirmed by the other person. Essentially it is just them letting you see their updates automatically.

To be safe I'd probably delete your account and take a magnet to your hard drive.

You probably could have just found a local 10 year old to explain this to you and saved yourself some public embarrassment.

Yes, I think you are right. However, I have 3 children and have therefore resigned myself to being a public embarrassment, at least in their eyes. It's part of the fun of parenting. I figure this is good practice.

Actually, I think I posted because I found the language "confirmed as a friend" to be so funny - a kind of line between virtual life and real life.

As Facebook would limit the amount of time that I (apparently) require to network here on the AO, I have decided to learn nothing about it.
