Dear Edmund,

A friend of mine told me if I didn't go to this party with them, they weren't going to be my friend anymore. I like the friend and I have no problem going to the party but there is a game on and a bar filled with hot women I would like to go to. This friend has really stuck by me through thick and thin though. So my question is, how do I choose between a game and the bar?

Signed,

Dear Edmund,

It is as I feared; it fell off this morning. What should I do?

By "it", do you refer to productivity?

More important, why are you using "them" to refer to a single person?

You two must be in cahoots!! No more letters from New Haven or Indiana.

Personally, I very much enjoyed winter this year.

Dear Edmund,

During the year you were gone, Indiana had a very nice winter. Unless you are particularly fond of deep snow.

This is not a question, just an excuse to say, "Welcome back."

The "singular they" has long been part of the English language, going back to Middle English (the pronouns of Old English preceded "they" as that entered via Old Norse and gained purchase in written language once France & England became separated again)
