I need to buy a new bike. I have just signed up for a bike ride in June. 100 miles on Saturday, return 100 miles on Sunday. So I need some kind of road bike.
What should I be looking for in a bike? And is now a good time to buy a bike (winter)? Or should I wait until spring? |

A good bike for that trip would have 4 wheels a roof, an engine and air conditioning.

The best advice I can give you is to go to a bicycle shop. They have highly trained highly skilled people there that can guide you to a proper decision.
If you're in the Minneapolis are, go to Freewheel.

1. Comfort. Get yourself sized-up properly. Nice, properly-padded bike seat. 2. Efficient gear-shifting. 3. Lightweight, knowing that the lighter, the more expensive AND the higher likelihood of theft. 4. If cost is an issue, buy used, but remember note #1. It might be difficult to find something that fits you well. Pedal arms can be changed, handlebars can be changed, etc. Heck, for one bike tour, I'd borrow someone's reasonably fitting bike. 5. Thin tires. Allows more speed with less effort. Higher chance of blowout, though. Not a problem if there are support vans, but still a minor inconvenience of borrowing a wheel, if you can't replace it yourself in a short time. How "wintery" is it? I'm sure there are bike stores that would love to sell you a bike right now. You'll probably want to buy a stationary training stand as well. The second day will be worse than the first, especially if you've never done one 100-mile tour.

First thing I thought of when I read the thread title. And dammit now it's going to be in my head all afternoon. |
