Default Appropriate punishment for a six year old

My six year old is very smart and bored at school. Actually, I'm not sure it's a matter of him being gifted as it is of him just already knowing the stuff they are teaching in kindergarten. He went to a really good preschool and basically they over-prepared him and he is reading and doing math at a first or second grade level at least. So anyway, he's bored at school and ends up getting in trouble.

We've talked to the school and really this isn't the point of the thread so I don't want to go into too much detail....the point is that we are trying to get his behavior to improve so we've done things like take away TV and video games. Well, yesterday morning he had a soccer game. He's one of the best kids on the team and he knows it and he really loves playing soccer so we had him get dressed for the game but told him he wouldn't be allowed to play today. We told the coach about some of the trouble we're having with him and asked him to just sit him the whole game and not let him play. Their team lost and I'm sure he was really frustrated by not being allowed to get on the field and help his team.

Then we told all the parents about it and asked them to ask him why he didn't play to kind of put him on the spot and make him fess up to his behavior. We thought it would really drive the point home that his behavior is unacceptable and that there are consequences. I guess we'll know MOnday when he goes back to school if it worked.

Anyway, the reason I am writing this is that one of the parents on the other team caught wind of what was going on with us (never saw this person before) and started commenting to others (but within our eashot) about it and how it was a horrible approach blah blah blah.

We thought it was a really brilliant idea.

Comments?

Other punishment ideas are welcome.

Are you kidding me? You're punishing him for being smart? What are you smoking?

Better approach: give him new fun challenges that he can dominate once he finishes his homework. And maybe don't overprepare in future? There is such thing as overstudying.

What are YOU smoking? Being smart is not an excuse for being disruptive in class or disrespecting the teacher (or whatever he did to get into trouble).

even if his stories are completely fabricated, does that make him a troll? his threads are entertaining and not hurting anyone.
