Default Freemasonry

I have read Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol and it concerns Freemasonry. I don’t have personal experience with Freemasonry and would like to know more generalities. FWIW, I found The Lost Symbol to be a beating of a book but at least it was an easy read and kept my interest through to completion.

Having known no Masons, I would like to know why one would join? I see it listed as a fraternal organization, so is it like a male-only country club atmosphere?

I know two masons (through work). Trust me, if these guys are running the world, we are all in trouble.

I've seen people I know wearing rings with the masonic symbol on them, but other than that I don't know much about the masons...

List of Freemasons

There are a good number who do. But I'm sure most wealthy people are in some type of country club.

Yes, well, of course, this is just the sort blinkered philistine pig ignorance I've come to expect from you non-creative garbage. You sit there on your loathsome, spotty behinds squeezing blackheads, not caring a tinker's cuss about the struggling artist. (shouting) You excrement! You lousy hypocritical whining toadies with your lousy colour TV sets and your Tony Jacklin golf clubs and your bleeding masonic handshakes! You wouldn't let me join, would you, you blackballing *******s? Well I wouldn't become a freemason now if you went down on your lousy, stinking, purulent knees and begged me!

I thought being a Freemason sounded intrigueing until I saw that they do a lot of charity work and stuff like that. No thanks! I'm off to play my Xbox!

I know a few freemasons, I don't what the hell they do, I think it is just an excuse for guys to get away from their wives for a night and hang out with other guys. I suppose it is an easier sell than telling her your going to Hooters /

So are they really "free"? Do they collect Mason jars? Do they know anything about bricks and mortar?
