I read an article that the Phils brought two things to the table: 1-yr deal for ~$1 mil with bonuses for lots of things Howard did last season; and a $900,000 "no agreement" deal. Howard's party wanted to discuss a multi-year deal only, and decided to let the negotiations end at a "stand still" and took the $900K as a "statement" instead of the 1-yr deal $1M deal Phils brought.

Lemme see if I can find a link.

The Phils will tell you they tried to pay Howard more than $900,000. They tried to get him to agree to a more lucrative one-year deal that included award bonuses - all-star teams and MVP, etc. When Howard's side would not agree on a new deal, the Phils dug in and renewed him.
Ah, but they renewed him at a lower price than they would have given him for agreeing. Amaro would not disclose the agreement offer, but he did confirm that it included award bonuses.

Spring means nothing. I'll worry if we are 5-10 to start April.

well not nothing, you do want to see the team come out healthy from spring and there are a few areas where it can be meaningful but in this case I tend to agree with you, escpeally as it relates to Howard.

What might be worriesome is T. Gordon has complained of some arm soreness. He was DLed last year and at his age any sign of arm touble is not good.
