Default Pros and cons of a research role?

What are the pros and cons of a research role in the research department of a large P&C insurer? Will such a research role make moving into a traditional pricing / reserving role later difficult? Thanks.

Advantages: Projects might be more interesting to you

Disadvantages: If the company downsizes who do you think they will keep, the reserving actuary and face possible immediate regulatory action or the research actuary and risk inferior products in five years?
