Over the weekend, Goldman Sachs analyst Sarah Friar sounded the alarms in a research note suggesting that Microsoft’s lack of a plan for a tablet PC will push the company into slower revenue growth, from 12 percent in 2010 to 7 percent in 2011.

That should tell you the stock analysts opinion of M$ tablet strategy...

And they're probably still being kind.

I doubt anyone is taking a Win7 touch tablet seriously. If MS ends up releasing a successful version of Windows for touch tablets, it will look nothing like Win7, and it won't arrive anytime soon.

By the time it does arrive -- if it does -- and for it to even be remotely viable, it will have to have totally redesigned touch versions of Office. If it doesn't, then why would anyone both with it? They can get every other app they need on the iPad or Android tablets that will exist a year from now.

It's a grim scenario for MS. Things are moving far faster than they're built for.

This rush of iPad competitors is not surprising in itself, as Apple tends to regularly define the direction of the electronic media and computing industries. What is surprising is that many of these products are not utilizing Intel microprocessors or a Microsoft operating environment. [W]e expect the vast majority of these devices to run the ARM architecture with either iOS or [Google's (GOOG)] Android as the operating environment. If this is the case and our tablet forecast is anywhere near accurate, this would be the first time in three decades that a non-Wintel technology has made legitimate inroads into personal computing.

Computing is no longer laptops and desktops, if you might have noticed. Plenty of people do all their personal computing on their phones now, or other PDAs.

So how the Mac Mini is doing is somewhat irrelevant for personal computing.
