I like that in this era of smartphone apps, that companies can give consumers that choice. Zynga's "...With Friends" games are a primary example of offering a free w/ads version and a paid ad-free version.

I've seen a disturbing trend of moving from a pay once model to a subscription model. If it is an ongoing service such as LastPass where me using it for a year cost them more than me using it for a month, I can understand. But now things like Twitter clients and an Instapaper app are using monthly subscriptions only (no pay one time version). Really annoying.

That could be the reason more companies are hopping on the ads version/paid ad-free combo train. One gives them a boost once, the other gives them an ongoing stream of revenue. As a consumer, I like the choice.

Key word: choice. Some companies don't get it. Like Intuit. They charge for Quicken, then they litter the interface with ads, too. This is the kind of misguided greed that ruins UIs.

Ads never really bothered me after pop-ups were taken care of. I kinda never understood why some people get so up in arms over them.

I have friends that come over and use my computer and get all crazy when they see I'm not using some sort of Adblocker extension. Are people really that distracted by them? I almost ignore them better than any ad blocking software would (which I did try once and felt like it slowed down my browsing experience).

your friends are right, ads cause pages to load slower; given a sufficient number

Do you mean that you installed ad blocking software like Adblock and it slowed things down? I find that really hard to believe since software like Adblocks actually stops the blocked domains from ever even being accepted so it should drastically speed up your connection time as ADD said above. I've always had far faster page loads when using Adblock software. I don't actually use it anymore for some reason. I just never bothered setting it up I guess.

You can also make an adblocking host file on your router which will block ads to your entire home network. That would be a nice project to do sometime.

I just know that I tried using it, and didn't enjoy my experience with the adblock on, and actively uninstalled the extension. I haven't used any of these extensions in almost 4 years though, so I'm sure they've gotten better. I just have no reason to use them; page ads don't bother me at all.

If anything, the only ads that bug me are video ads; especially when sites make me watch a 30 second commercial just to get to a 2 minute video.

I have a Flash blocking plugin installed and it takes care of the biggest offenders. I'm dreading the day when the Flash ads decide to switch to HTML5. Upside to Flash: Easily blockable. HTML5 is going to make things difficult on that front.

I read that the TouchPad supports Flash but not all that well. If you disable Flash to boost performance, that also causes problems. For some reason, if you visit a site like YouTube with Flash turned off, it won't give you the HTML5 version (iPad version). So with the TouchPad, you even get less of the web on your device.

I block all Flash as a general rule. To me, it makes more sense to view Flash on an exception basis. There are just too many security and stability issues to let it run amok in the browser, IMO.
