Yes, I believe the smart cover will work on the new iPad.

The new iPad is slighly thicker, so iPad 2 hard shell cases won't work, and some soft shells may fit.

One thing I hate about Android. Not enough places making high quality cases/accessories.

I would think so. The size difference is immaterial.

The smart cover Apple sells for the new iPad is exactly the same as the one sold with the iPad 2.

Not sure if srs. If anything, they should give users the option.
All PCs should still ship with 8-inch, 5 1⁄4-inch, and 3 1⁄2-inch floppy disk drives too. Also, some people probably have zip disks laying around, so that should be an add on too.

At some point, as a hardware manufacturer, you have to part with older media technologies to better the experience. Storing applications on external media will always create a sub-optimal experience.

I personally like having more on-board storage so that I don't have to fumble with external media. Note that you can upload photos to the iPad using the camera connection kit, which is compatible with SD cards.
The only downside to spring those ports is size and cost. You don't get a better experience by their absence. The new ipad is big enough that size shouldn't be an issue.

Since my camera is not web enabled, this would be enough of a nuisance that I'd never use the ipad as a primary photo thing.

Is the smart cover alone sufficient? That would be my preference over a case or smart cover + case. How strong/shatter proof is the glass used in the ipad? Would I need a case for it to survive a 3-4ft drop onto a hard surface?

switcheasy's is released for the new iPad and the iPad 2. I think they redesigned theirs to fit both of them. The cases for iPad 2 had a lot more color selection.

If you expect to frequently drop the iPad, you should shop for a big sturdy case. If you don't expect to drop it a lot, the smart cover is ample protection for normal use. The glass is extremely scratch resistant on its own.

I've seen some absolutely shattered iPads. unlike the iPhone, buying the glass is not cheap to repair. I think it's like $50. I definitely like to protect my iPad. The smart cover is flimsy and the magnet isn't strong (not referring to the hinge magnet). when you hold your iPad upside down, the part that's supposed to latch to the iPad can open up in a fall.

well, clearly the camera is at fault here
