Well, I was lucky enough to find a company who is still in the recruiting process of hiring full-time entry levels. They have two positions open, and I pretty much feel like this is my last shot at getting hired for a while. Any suggestions on how to get noticed and "jump off the page"? I've submitted online applications for both positions, and I feel like I should email maybe a few people in the company, but I don't think the typical cold email "do you have any positions available?" will suffice. Any ideas? I feel like I'm a competitive candidate (P, FM, health internship, and 3.94 GPA), but it seems like there's always Brad Pitt interviewing before me with 4 exams.

Have you tried making a promotional type video with you selling yourself and your skill set in front of the camera? Maybe showing you in different settings: business, academic, athletic, etc.
I don't see how something like this could possibly go wrong. Go for it, bro! |

Did you find out about these positions through a contact? If so, use the contact to possibly initiate a conversation with someone at the company.
If you didn't have a contact "on the inside" then essentially what you're wanting to tell the chief actuary or whomever you decide to contact is that you found out that there was an opening on the website/newspaper/carrier pigeon's note/smoke signals and that you applied for it. Then you'd do the whole "please, please, please, please, please hire me" in the tone of "I think I'd be a great fit at your company" like you would in any other cold email. Think about it... you already applied for the positions, why would you ask if any are available As for "jumping off the page" ... the resume is what gets you the interview, the interview is the make/break point. If you're getting interviews already, you're "jumping off the page." If you're not getting hired, then "Brad Pitt" is interviewing better. Keep in mind that if you're desperate, it's easy for the interviewer to see that... and for most people it's kind of a turn-off. Relax. Relax. Relax. Be yourself and, even if you have every reason to, don't panic. |

IFYP. Brad Pitt would not do good in an actuarial interview. Too good looking. Surely someone as good looking as him will have an active social life and every woman in teh office will stop by to talk to him daily. For an actuarial job, interviewers want a big time nerd who has little to no life outside of work and won't move from his/her cube all day long.

Without other bad stuff jumping out at me, this would get you a phone screen. If you blow the phone screen, that had nothing to do with how good or bad the previous candidate had done. Especially if there are two positions, it's all on you.
